In der Bangkok Post wird berichtet, daß man leider von ca. 2000 burmesischen Opfern (Arbeitern) in Thailand ausgehen mus.
Hier nochmal ein Bericht:
"Myanmar was spared, the island Sumatra perhaps took the brunt of the
quake, and saved many lives in the east Indian Ocean. The government
reported 34 deaths, probably persons in the sea or seashore. The
tremors were felt in Yangon, especially in the high rise buildings,
including Traders Hotel. I slept through it, and didn't
know about the tragedy until yesterday at noon, more than 24 hours
later. A friend spent Christmas in Ngapali Beach (Bayview Hotel) and
said the waves were high, but there was no damage to anything in the
area. They heard some swimmers were dragged away from the beach in Ngwe
Saung and Chaungtha in the south. The quake struck Myanmat at 0732 the
day after Christmas, and luckily not many people, especially tourists,
were out swimming in the sea, perhaps saving us from a greater tragedy.
Phuket, on the east Indian Ocean was the main tragedy - the island may
have dispersed the tsunami somewhat."
