Eight Burmese Army soldiers killed, 14 injured in KNU ambush
Wednesday, 04 August 2010 Saw Thein Myint News - KIC

Eight Burmese Army soldiers were killed and 14 injured following an
ambush by the KNU in Pai Kyon Township, Pa-an district, Karen state
yesterday.

KNU’s armed wing, the KNLA’s soldiers ambushed Burmese Army Infantry
Battalion 62 under MOC 19 of Puu Luu military camp. When IB 62 was
patrolling the Say Pho Khe area, which is under the control of KNU,
for confronting the KNLA battalion 22, its soldiers ambushed IB 62,
Pha Doh Saw Aung Maw Aye, chairman of KNU's Pa-an district, said.

"Our forces ambushed IB 62 under MOC 19, which was patrolling to take
on the KNLA battalion 22, in Say Pho Khe area at noon. Eight troopers
of the Burmese Army were killed on the spot and 14 injured. Among
those killed was the second commanding officer of Burmese Army’s IB
62. No one was hurt on our side," he added.

The gun battle continued for half an hour. Then the Burmese Army
retraced its steps after the casualties on their side. It is learnt
that the Burmese Army took 20 villagers as porters from Say Pho Khe
and Mae Lar Ar Khe villages to carry away the injured soldiers and
returned to its Tar Lay military camp.

According to locals, junta’s forces with the injured troopers went
back to Shwe Kukko village, Myawaddy.

There have been four gun battles between KNU and Burmese Army troops
during July and early August in Pa-an district. The junta’s forces
lost a number of soldiers. There are 10 battalions under the MOC 19,
DKBA brigade 999 and KNU battalions of brigade 7 patrolling Pa-an
district.
Can anyone confirm if this news is correct and the possible impact on trips southwards if the message is true.

The message seems to be true as I found another source with about the same story.

Karen squad ambushes 110 junta troops, kills nine including officer

Chiang Mai (Mizzima) – Karen rebels in a 15-member squad equipped with only automatic rifles and the rain ambushed a government battalion with more than 100 troops on Tuesday, killing nine junta soldiers including the force’s deputy commander and wounding 14 others, the Karen National Liberation Army has said.

Having received advanced warning from villagers of the approach of the junta’s 110-strong 62nd Infantry Battalion, the KNLA 22nd Battalion had lain in wait in the mountainous terrain of central Karen State, south of Paikyone Township.

Their attack killed seven lower-ranking soldiers and deputy field commander Major Tun Min Kyu. Reports said one of the wounded junta soldiers later died.

The KNLA forms the armed wing of the independence movement, the Karen National Union (KNU). The battalion it attacked is under the Burmese Army’s Military Operations Command No. 19 based in Yay Township.

“There was heavy rain and creeks were flooded with torrents of water, which made them difficult to cross,” Pa-an district KNU chairman Pado Saw Aung Maw Aye told Mizzima. “Moreover, there are no proper roads in this area. We took position and posted lookouts, then ambushed them.”

Fourteen junta troops were wounded and were taken to the nearest military base at Tarlay, he added. Another report said the Burmese Army had used 20 residents from Sayphokhe and Maelarkhe villages as porters to carry the injured to the base.

More is found at Mizzima news. I only have a hard time finding the places mentioned on the map and I wonder if it is still safe to go to the south, or if Hpa-an and surroundings is affected by the violence.
