Feb. 9 (Bloomberg) -- Myanmar's Foreign Minister Win Aung
said the opposition National League for Democracy will be allowed
to operate normally in the lead up to a constitutional convention
planned for later this year, Agence France-Presse reported.
The junta may also lift restrictions on detained opposition
leader Aung San Suu Kyi, AFP cited Win Aung as saying at a
regional meeting in Thailand. He said the move would be a
``confidence-building'' measure before the convention, which aims
to draft a new constitution and pave the way for elections.
``The government is doing all it can to normalize the
situation,'' AFP cited Win Aung as saying. ``It's something that
will take place. That's the atmosphere we would like to see.''
Win Aung said the convention will take place this year. He
didn't set a date. Myanmar's military has ruled the country
formerly known as Burma since 1962. It rejected the victory of the
National League for Democracy in elections in 1990. Suu Kyi and
other opposition figures have been detained by the military since
unrest in May led to a crackdown on the opposition.
